The Driftless Zone

Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa, an Illinois Resort set amidst the stunning 6,800-acre Galena Territory, rests in what archaeologists call the “Driftless Zone.”

During the Ice Ages – particularly the most recent Ice Age—the Galena Illinois Territory remained generally untouched by glaciers.  Glaciers headed south during this time, flattening most of the Midwestern United States.  The “Driftless Zone” refers to the region that was not covered by glaciers during the recent ice ages.  This area, which includes the far northwestern corner of Illinois where you'll find our Illinois resort, escaped glaciation.

The site of our Illinois resort remained untouched even when the entire state was glaciated, nearly to its southern tip.  Because it escaped glaciation, the expansive land in Illinois upon which you'll find our resort features exposed rock and rolling hills.  The soil here is different from the deep soils that cover almost the entire State.

Not far from our Illinois resort, you'll find Charles Mound.  Located in the Driftless Zone, Charles Mound is the state's highest natural elevation above sea level at 1,235 feet (376 m) – surely reminiscent of the lack of glacial activity in the area.
